More than 500 students at the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) have elected a new leadership structure for The Pan-African Movement – Rwanda Chapter (PAM-Rwanda), marking a significant step in youth engagement with Africa’s liberation ideology. The election, held in April, was followed by a public event where prominent leaders, including Mr. Richard Niyonkuru, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration at UNILAK, and Hon. Prof. Ngabitsinze, inspired attendees on the importance of Pan-African unity, history, and values.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Niyonkuru traced the roots of Pan-Africanism, emphasizing its role in breaking colonial mentalities and fostering self-reliance among African youth.
“Pan-Africanism is not just history—it is a call to action,” he said. “We must unite to overcome the lingering effects of colonialism and build a future where Africa defines its own destiny.”
He also introduced members of PAM-Rwanda, highlighting the movement’s mission to promote continental solidarity, economic independence, and cultural pride.
The newly elected student leaders pledged to organize debates, workshops, and campaigns to deepen understanding of Pan-Africanism among their peers.
“We are the generation that must rewrite Africa’s story,” said one of the newly elected PAM representatives. “Through education and activism, we will challenge outdated narratives and push for true liberation—mentally, economically, and politically.”
The election saw the swearing-in of a dynamic new team, including:
- Chairperson: Sharon Kabatesi
- Vice Chairperson: Shema Ndungutse
- Secretary: Mucyo Eric
- Six Commissioners, including Commissioner Shyaka Michael Nyarwaya, who emphasized entrepreneurial growth and discipline as key pillars for Africa’s future.
The newly sworn-in leaders were introduced at a public event where prominent figures, including Mr. Richard Niyonkuru, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration at UNILAK, and Hon. Prof. Ngabitsinze, inspired attendees on the importance of Pan-African unity, history, and values.
The event also featured insights from Hon. Prof. Ngabitsinze, who urged students to leverage knowledge as a tool for empowerment.
“The future of Africa depends on informed, bold, and united youth,” he stated. “PAM-Rwanda is not just a club—it’s a movement for transformation.”
With this new leadership in place, UNILAK students are poised to play a key role in advancing Pan-African ideals, ensuring that the next generation carries forward the vision of a strong, self-determined Africa.
